If you’re a fan of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, then you will want to see “To The Moon and Beyond: Graphic Films and Inception of 2001: A Space Odyssey” at the Museum of the Moving Image. Research and sketches for the film began in 1965, by a California-based production company known as Graphic Films. The exhibition is full of unseen art and correspondence between Kubrick and Graphic Films, including over twenty sketches for space vehicles and a lunar base, and technical advice and script suggestions. You can even see an early draft of the script!

Fashionistas, this exhibition is for you! “MANUS x MACHINA Fashion in an Age of Technology,” looks at the juxtaposition between handmade and machine-made haute couture and ready-to-wear clothing. The exhibition, presented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Robert Lehman Wing and Anna Wintour Costume Center, features over 120 ensembles from the 1800s to present day. Haute couture and ready-to-wear looks are placed side-by-side so that you can compare handmade techniques such as embroidery, pleating, leatherwork and lacework, to machine-made techniques such as circular knitting, 3D printing, laser cutting, and more.

Running for another month, “Open Plan: Steve McQueen,” is an experimental five-part exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The museum’s fifth floor serves as an open gallery without any interior walls. The exhibition focuses on an expanded version of artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen’s work “End Credits.” This work highlights documents the FBI kept on file of Paul Robeson, a well-known African-American performer.

As the third exhibition featured in the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, “But A Storm Is Blowing From Paradise” explores contemporary artwork out of the Middle East and North African region, including videos, photos, sculptures and various other mediums portraying the artistic movements that are thriving in the region. After the exhibition, many of these works will go on to become part of the permanent collection at the Guggenheim.

“Jackson Pollock: A Collection Survey, 1934-1954,” is an exhibition running through May 1 at MoMa (The Museum of Modern Art). The exhibition features fifty Jackson Pollock drawings, prints and paintings from the 1930s through the 1950s. This way, you can see Pollock’s artistic evolution from his loose figurative images to his abstract, dripping paint works. Jackson Pollock’s greatest painting and one of his largest canvases entitled “One: Number 31, 1950,” will be part of the exhibition.
